Beginning with a capital C

‘Wonderful Copenhagen’. It’s practically the first thing you notice as you step into Kastrup’s shrine to Danish design, unashamedly sprawled across the airport’s walls and billboards with bold promises of a memorable escapade. Yes it’s cheesy, but luckily it is what it says on the packet, and I’m not blagging.

Having lived in the Danish capital for the last 3 years I’ve learnt that cool Copenhagen has less to do with temperature – ok it gets chilly in winter, autumn, spring… and summer (frustratingly so) – and more to do with living a carefree life where no one tells you what to do. Well they can try but they won’t get very far. And it’s true what they say about the Danes being the happiest people in the world. Seriously, they’re so damn happy what with shorter than average working hours, great food and beer, the best restaurant in the world, a perfectly proportioned capital with beaches on its doorstep, and a bicycle network that gets you anywhere in the city in less time than it takes to get to the top of the Eiffel tower, all adding up to an enviable lifestyle. Throw Copenhagen’s excellent cultural amenities into the mix, which you can explore here, and you can see why Copenhagen is my kinda city!

Aside from its cultural assets and Denmark’s design ethos with its return to natural forms and pure lines, the irresistible signature of Danish minimalism, the city dwellers look fabulous too. Or as my brother exclaimed when he first arrived from black-haired China, ‘Thank heavens for blondes!’ And yes there are blondes a-plenty, all looking effortlessly alluring with the au naturel look they do so well. Copenhagen has certainly upped the fashion ante in recent years and there’s some great designer shopping to be done. Just walk this way and I’ll guide you to some of the city’s most stylish boutiques for a wickedly indulgent head-to-toe glam slam. And with global attention focusing on the New Nordic Cuisine, thanks in no small part to Noma, you can enjoy beautifully crafted, sensational food in the new crop of exciting restaurants that are springing up everywhere. From Denmark with love.

But when all that’s said and done, Copenhagen is about Copenhageners going about their business, looking fab and enjoying a rather stylish, easy-going lifestyle, which is attracting a whole new wave of style-savvy tourists and cool hunters. So whether you’re here for a weekend romp or are living the cool life I’ve no doubt that Copenhagen will tick your happiness box too. Just get cracking and explore!
